"Many times we do not express an emotion because we have been taught it is wrong to do so, and we need to learn to believe that all emotion or sensory responses---whichever and whatever---belong to us and are part of us, and we have the right experience and express every single one of them." - Acting for the Camera (Tony Barr) | These are two of my favorite quotes, and I try my hardest to live by them on a day to day basis. I think it is really important to remember to allow yourself to feel things. We spend so much of our lives as we grow up, learning to build walls around us to keep everyone else at arms length. Don't feel. Don't feel. Don't feel. But the thing is, we are emotional creatures. You have to let yourself be affected by the world around you, especially as a musician/actor. Stop building walls. Let yourself be vulnerable. This world is a rich and full and beautiful place, and it is only when we let ourselves feel that that we get to experience it to it's fullest. I believe that it is my job as a songwriter to constantly make myself vulnerable, so that I can write better, so that I can perform better, so that I can give you all the very best of me every time. Sometimes, that is the hardest part about this whole thing. I have to constantly remind myself that I don't ever have to apologize for the things I feel. (And neither do you!) I go in circles, and I eventually end up in the same place each time... Let yourself be affected by things. Let yourself feel. And don't be afraid to be vulnerable. |
